ADULT BOOKS
"The Help" by Kathryn Stockett
Having just graduated from Ole Miss, Skeeter returns home to Jackson, Mississippi to enter society as any proper young Southern woman should...by getting married to a proper husband and having a proper home and a proper number of babies. But Skeeter doesn't quite fit the mold. She has some strange ideas about changing things. In her novel, Kathryn Stockett has created three extraordinary women whose ideas and actions may have a profound effect on themselves and the society in which they live. A great read.
"Angels in the ER" by Robert D. Lesslie, MD
Even though each chapter of this book is introduced by a Biblical verse, this is not a book which 'preaches' or instructs.....rather this is a book which gives us a window into a world which is full of crisis and tension, and the attitudes of the people who are brave and dedicated enough to work there. In his introduction, Dr. Lesslie tells us that being an emergency room physician has taught him that life is indeed fragile, and because of this we need to say the things we deeply feel to the people we care about. Filled with stories some of which are amusing and delightful, as well as others which are thoughtful and sobering, these stories do not all end "happily ever after". But always present is hope and love, and caring.
"Heaven is for Real" by Todd Burpo
When three-year-old Colin miraculously survives the trauma of a ruptured appendix, his father, Todd, a part-time preacher, is convinced that God has answered the prayers of his family and congregation. It is not until Colin tells his Dad of visiting Heaven and seeing Jesus, that Todd realizes just what a significant miracle has occurred. This story can be for us a glimpse into heaven as Colin experienced it, and an encouragement to those who doubt. Simply written and easily read, this book is recommended by members of our congregation as an addition to our church library.

Rachel's work and writing were among the first to show how the beauty of nature can be ruined by careless use of chemicals. Her book "Silent Spring" was one of the first to show people that we must take care of our earth. Through her work, Rachel showed us that one woman can make a real difference in our world.
