Welcome to Dulin Church!
Our Team
James, born in Norfolk, Virginia, and raised in Chesapeake, is the eldest of three siblings. He graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies. After commencing his theological studies at Candler School of Theology, he took a hiatus to question his destiny in ministry. Subsequently, he completed his Master of Divinity degree at Wesley Theological Seminary. James has served as an associate pastor at Hinton Avenue in Charlottesville, senior pastor for the Bowman Charge in Elbert County, Georgia, Director of Children, Youth, and Young Adults at Hughes in Wheaton, Maryland, and most recently, pastor at Saint James in Alexandria. During his time at The Living School, a contemplative school offered through the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque, New Mexico, James spent two years studying with Fr. Richard Rohr, Dr. James Finley, and Dr. Cynthia Bourgeault. Additionally, he has held positions as spiritual director and summer and Fellows’ chaplain for Appalachia Service Project. James met and married Linda Patterson at Wesley Theological Seminary. They have been married for 33 years and have two adult children, Hannah Grace and Joshua Caleb. Hannah is engaged to John Hall, and they are scheduled to be married in November of this year. James’s faith led him to dedicate the past eight years to delving into the works of Christian mystics, including Julian of Norwich, Thomas Merton, Hildegard von Bingen, and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, among others. Recently, this passion has led James to become captivated by the study of classic Aramaic, the language spoken by Jesus, as it enriches our understanding of Jesus’s teachings and modeled behavior. In addition to these pursuits, James enjoys reading fantasy and science fiction, hiking, camping, board games, and gluten-free baking.
